Total Seal Piston Rings

Gapless Ring Technology

Every conventional piston ring has a weak point: the end gap, where the two ends of the ring meet. Under cylinder pressure, that small opening is where sealing fails first, the path for blow-by, the leak in an otherwise perfect ring pack. Total Seal’s patented Gapless design closes that path with a second, overlapping ring segment that keeps the seal continuous around the full circumference of the bore, regardless of how far the conventional gap has opened from wear.

Gapless Top Ring – provides the greatest performance benefit through increased horsepower and crankcase vacuum. Total Seal recommends it for naturally aspirated applications, especially V8 and straight engines. Eliminating blow-by at the top ring translates directly into more usable cylinder pressure, a wider torque curve, and a stronger intake vacuum signal.

Gapless 2nd Ring – provides excellent oil control and blow-by prevention. Total Seal recommends it for flat (horizontally opposed), turbo, and supercharged engines. Sealing the second ring land more completely reduces oil consumption and keeps oil cleaner and cooler for longer between services.

Across both configurations, the benefits are the same: less blow-by, more usable horsepower and torque, cleaner and cooler oil, and fewer teardowns over the life of the engine. This is why we specify Total Seal ring packs across our race piston series – a Gapless ring pack does the same job as a conventional set, just without the one weak point every conventional ring shares.

Total Seal Gapless — FAQ (πηγή: totalseal.com/support-and-downloads)

What advantage does the Gapless Top Ring offer over the Gapless 2nd Ring? The Total Seal gapless top ring is the natural evolution of the gapless second. By moving the gapless ring to the #1 ring groove we effectively seal the cylinder closer to the combustion chamber. This not only increases the cylinder seal on the compression and power stokes but also improves the ring seal on the intake stroke resulting in better cylinder filling on a normally aspirated engine. The increased amount of force generated by the combustion process in turn delivers a greater amount of energy to the crankshaft. The choice is yours and either ring offers superior cylinder sealing.

Can I use a Gapless Top Ring if my piston is gas ported? Yes, Gas porting aids in keeping any top ring seated in high rpm / high cylinder pressure applications.

Should the Gapless ring be installed on the piston with the rail side facing up or down? The gapless ring is always installed rail side down.

When file fitting the Gapless ring do I need to file the rail? Yes the ring and the rail need be filed*. Follow the gapping chart supplied with the ring set.
* The rail end gap can be larger than the primary ring but not smaller.
